Most hero ingredients in skincare are marketing inventions. GHK-Cu is the opposite โ a peptide with one of the longest research trails in cosmetic science, discovered decades before it became fashionable. This monograph covers what it is, why it is blue, and how it is used well.
1. A short history
In 1973, biochemist Dr Loren Pickart identified a small three-amino-acid peptide, glycyl-L-histidyl-L-lysine, with a remarkable affinity for binding copper.[2] The complex it forms, GHK-Cu, is found naturally in human plasma, saliva and urine. Our levels decline significantly as we age, in parallel with the changes many people describe in their forties and fifties.[3] Its structure is shown in Figure 1.
2. Why the blue
That signature blue colour is the copper itself, bound within the peptide complex. It is the natural colour of a genuine copper peptide solution, no dye required. A serum that has drifted brown or green is typically a sign of oxidation โ an aged and degraded bottle.
3. What it is used for in cosmetics
GHK-Cu is applied topically for the appearance of ageing skin: firmer and more lifted looking, smoother and more refined in texture, and a more even, luminous tone.[1] It is frequently chosen as the gentler path, delivering a visible-results routine without the irritation profile of retinoids or exfoliating acids.
4. How it is used well
A stated dose, so you know what you are getting, for example 1%. A fresh supply, because oxidation degrades copper peptides after opening, so small bottles used within about a month stay at strength while a large bottle ages on the shelf, as shown in Figure 2. A simple daily ritual of two to three drops on clean, slightly damp skin, morning and night. And patience to week eight, since the look of firmness builds gradually.
5. Fifty years on
Fifty years after its discovery, the little blue molecule has earned its moment. The brands worth your money are the ones treating it with the respect the science deserves: honest dosing, fresh delivery, and no shortcuts.
